How to know it
A crisp grey-and-white tit with a black head, white cheeks and a black band running down the white breast. Smart, neat and active.
What it eats
Insects and spiders, with seeds and berries in winter, worked over from leaves and bark.
Where & when to spot it
Through the trees and gardens, often in mixed flocks, announcing itself with a cheerful, ringing whistle.
Nesting & mating
In a tree-hole or wall cavity lined with moss and wool; four to six eggs in spring.
