How to know it
A stout-billed finch; the adult male flushes rosy-red on the head, breast and rump, while females and young are a plain streaky brown.
What it eats
Seeds, buds, shoots and berries, with some insects — often feeding quietly in flocks.
Where & when to spot it
In the bushes, hedges and flowering shrubs through winter, especially up around Ranikhet, in loose, unobtrusive parties.
Nesting & mating
Breeds farther north and higher up in summer; a low cup in a bush, three to six eggs.
