How to know it
A large green barbet, the head and breast brown finely streaked with white, with bare yellow skin around the eye and a big pale bill. A canopy fruit-eater.
What it eats
Fruit, especially figs, with some insects; like other barbets, a steady disperser of seeds.
Where & when to spot it
High in fruiting trees, mostly down in the warmer foothills, calling a loud, repeated note through the day.
Nesting & mating
Excavates a hole in a tree-trunk; two to four eggs raised inside.
